Arbor Week 22nd June to 26th June 2009

Kids Go Green to Help Platypus Habitat

The launch of Arbor Week 2009 saw The Natural Resources Conservation League of Victoria and Greening Australia forging a new partnership with the Warburton community. Natural Resources Conservation League as part of the week's celebrations invited four lucky schools which included Dixon's Creek, Chum Creek, Milwarra East Warburton Campus and Yering Primary School for a free Inside Forest Excursion Program. The cost of the bus travel for the day's events was also included with a generous donation of $1,000 from the Victorian Teachers Credit Union helping fund these travel expenses. The Corangamite and Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authorities also provide Arbor Week with additional funding towards our week of celebrations.

The Shire of Yarra Ranges provided us with 850 habitat plants from their Ribbons of Green Program. The Shire provided site preparation with the aim of this collaboration to boost vegetation supporting platypus food and habitat along the banks of the Yarra River.

Students were given the opportunity to visit the Skywalk Rainforest Gallery and to learn about the important food sources and habitat requirements of the native animals that live in and around the Yarra catchment and why it is so important that this area is preserved. Students also experienced hands on learning at our Environment Discovery Centre with many being treated to an up close and personal look at our Blue Tongue Lizard called Bluey.
This program builds on Natural Resources Conservation Leagues environmental, community and school education programs and Greening Australia's national River Recovery Program. We look forward to this new partnership to develop even further in 2010.
